The actors were never told in advance what was in store for their characters. Each new episode was just as much a surprise for them as it was for the viewers.
故事的背景設(shè)定在公元2257年，人類已經(jīng)突破光速，開(kāi)始大規(guī)模星際旅行及在太陽(yáng)系附近殖民，與多個(gè)外星文明接觸并有貿(mào)易聯(lián)系。一天，一艘地球聯(lián)邦的星際驅(qū)逐艦在探索未知星際空間的時(shí)候遇到一艘不明星船，因?yàn)檎`判對(duì)方意圖而先敵開(kāi)火。對(duì)方叫明巴利外星族（Minbari），比人類早進(jìn)化發(fā)展幾千年，其技術(shù)人類無(wú)法望其項(xiàng)背。不巧的是地球星船孤注一擲先敵開(kāi)火的時(shí)候把灰色議會(huì)議長(zhǎng)杜哈的給干掉了（那位老兄其實(shí)知道按大設(shè)計(jì)藍(lán)圖，明巴利必須與地球人聯(lián)合并融合，這次到這里也不是閑逛，而是準(zhǔn)備與地球人第一次親密接觸）。于是明巴利對(duì)地球開(kāi)戰(zhàn)，摧枯拉朽所向披糜，在對(duì)地球本土最后一擊的過(guò)程中，明巴利卻突然停止進(jìn)攻并宣布投降。總之，停戰(zhàn)后地球出資在中立空間建設(shè)“巴比倫空間站"，致力星際交流、談判及和平合作。前面四座都被摧毀或莫名其妙消失，于是有了巴比倫5號(hào)。巴5軍頭Sheridan和明巴利大使笛嵐（Delenn）帶領(lǐng)眾嘍羅，聯(lián)合火星殖民地抵抗力量反對(duì)地球聯(lián)邦通過(guò)謀殺政變而上臺(tái)的獨(dú)裁總統(tǒng)，聯(lián)合各外星文明反擊神秘黑暗種類——影族（Shadows），向佛隆人（Vorlon）說(shuō)不，最終走上獨(dú)立自主自力更生的發(fā)展文明道路。
